This course consists of 6 core units and 1 elective that forms the basis of a Rail Worker Basic Skill Set. Rail operators consider this skill set to be the minimum requirement for anyone wanting to work within the rail infrastructure as a track worker.

Overview

This course is designed for persons engaged in basic operations within the rail infrastructure environment undertaking range of tasks involving routines and procedures and taking some responsibility for the quality of work outcomes.

Upon successful completion of all assessments, students will receive:

Statement of Attainment with relevant UOC will be issued on completion of either all 16 or just the 7 core UOC.

  • Install ballast, sleepers, rail, and fastenings
  • Undertake general housekeeping tasks
  • Understand track geometry fundamentals

Entry Requirements

The pre-requisites for this course are either one of the following:

  • TLIF0020 Safely Access the Rail Corridor    OR
  • TLIF2080 Safely Access the Rail Corridor

All participants must wear appropriate PPE including:

  • Hi-vis orange
  • Long sleeve shirt
  • Long pants
  • High ankle steel-capped safety boots
  • Gloves.
  • Hard Hat.
  • Safety Glasses

LLN Requirements:

Participants will undergo an LLN assessment at the commencement of the course, this will indicate to us the required support the individual may require under the LLN to complete this course effectively.
  • Read and understand work safety signs and symbols
  • Read and understand workplace policies and procedures
  • Communicate identified hazards
  • Calculations of time spent on different activities

  • Practical demonstration in using the actual rail hand tools
